After being guided in meditation we may feel more peaceful, rejuvenated and in higher spirits. This is the joy of guided meditation.
Guided meditation is a wonderful way to begin your path of daily meditation. Read on to understand what it is, what to expect and how to make the most of your guided meditation experience.
Experiencing the Joy of Guided Meditation
Guided meditation is a partnership between a guide and a meditator. Your role as the meditator, is to relax as much as possible and to follow the suggestions of me - your guide. My guiding role is to safely escort you - the meditator, on a spiritual journey.
During this journey you will be encouraged to activate all of your senses. To realistically create an internal scene that you can sense, feel, see, hear, smell and know. The attention brought to this means that your mind is less likely to wander than with other traditional meditation practices that focus only on the breath or mantra.
The concentration that such a task brings, focuses the mind. A focussed mind becomes calm and creates space for clarity, intuitive guidance and creative solutions to arise. After meditating we may feel peaceful, rejuvenated and in higher spirits. This is the joy of guided meditation.
Performing a guided meditation within a group setting draws on the power of collective intention. The whole group can experience a calmer, more profound, uplifting meditation than they may otherwise have experienced on their own. This is the power of the group uniting with the same intention.
Preparing to Meditate
To make the most of your guided meditation experience, you’ll want to be prepared. Here’s what I suggest…
During meditation we want to relax and let go. But we also want to retain a calm, alert, awareness. It’s best to sit upright, either cross-legged on the floor or with the support of a straight-backed chair. You could even sit up in your bed, supported by pillows and snuggled under the blankets - toasty! It’s best not to lay down during the meditation because we are conditioned to sleep in this pose. So sit upright, with a sense of grace and dignity - you are about to connect to your divinity and greater wisdom after all!
You will probably also want to have a blanket with you as your body temperature tends to drop when very relaxed. I also like to have a glass of water nearby to help me ground back into my body at the end of a meditation. This also acts as a “flush” to help me symbolically clear out old energy.
Once ready to join the group meditation you can expect to be lead on a journey of the senses. As your guide I will ask you to close your eyes and relax, and you will be invited to follow my suggestions.
You will be guided to engage all your senses to access divine wisdom, to know your truth, to find creative solutions, to create and experience a new reality - maybe this involves anchoring a healthy, abundant, authentic version of yourself into this life. There is creative freedom in guided meditation and we can use it however we wish.
Once our journey is completed you will be guided back into the room, your body and the present moment. This is a very important step in the process so don’t rush it! Completing this successfully means you’re able to ground and action the creative insights you received during the meditation. So taking time to “come back” is very important, not to mention you can feel jarred and out of sorts for the rest of the day if you open your eyes before you’ve fully integrated!
After your Meditation
The relaxed awareness that meditation induces supports healing within your body, reduces feelings of anxiety and depression, all while connecting to your soul's wisdom.
Upon opening your eyes you will feel different than before. With awareness, and without judgement simply notice how you feel and then let it go.
