The Reiki Initiation Ceremony is a transformational ritual that formally welcomes you into a community of other compassionate Reiki practitioners, and illuminates your path to enlightenment.
After many years of spiritual training and on the verge of death, the founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui, experienced enlightenment on Mount Kurama which awakened his spiritual gift of healing. This was his personal, sacred initiation experience which inspired him to create the system of Reiki and teach it to others, so that we could reach enlightenment and heal others too.
Usui had built a strong foundation from years of spiritual practice which facilitated his enlightenment experience. But he recognised that most people don’t have the time or desire to undertake such dangerous methods in their pursuit of satori, so he found a way to share his experience of illumination with his students.
He called it Reiju. Simply translated Reiju means "spiritual blessing" or “spiritual offering”. It’s the Initiation Ceremony that awakens us to our spiritual energy, our Reiki, and is one of the most special elements of Reiki.
Reiju allows us to glimpse our True Self, then we can remember it again and again in our daily life. The more we remember it, the more we will embody our True Self.

While the ceremony is sometimes called an Attunement, a more accurate term would be Initiation.
The Reiki Initiation provides an “initial" heightened experience of our true self/Reiki. During the Initiation the Reiki student experiences an expansion of consciousness and is offered the blessing of remembering their spiritual essence.
Reiki is the spiritual energy present in all things without exception, it’s our essence so we don't need to be "attuned" to it. Remember Mikao Usui teaches that "I exist in the universe, and the universe exists in me!"
It's through the illumination of Reiki that we catch a glimpse of our soul - and just like Mikao Usui we begin to remember our potential, our natural gifts and talents, our purpose and who we really are. With this wisdom we begin to live differently. We find that the initiation has marked the emergence of a new phase in our lives.
But the Reiki Initiation Ceremony is just the beginning. To fully integrate the experience and ground the truth we have glimpsed, we must diligently practice the other elements of the Reiki system. The solid foundation we create with regular practice allows us to offer meaningful healing to others.
Preparing for Your Reiki Initiation Ceremony
The Reiki Initiation is a sacred ceremony that formally marks your acceptance into a community of other compassionate Reiki practitioners.
The purpose of the ceremony is to offer an “initial" heightened experience of your inner light, Reiki, that illuminates your path.
To enhance your Reiki Initiation experience you might like to:
Receive Reiki healing in the lead up to your Reiki training.
Develop an attitude of gratitude.
Eat a variety of fruit and vegetables.
Drink plenty of water.
Exercise regularly.
Refrain from excess caffeine, nicotine and alcohol.
Get adequate sleep.
Engage in self-care activities that fulfil you.
Spend time connecting to nature.
Connect to your spiritual side with prayer or meditation.
Recite the 5 Reiki Precepts.
Release all expectations and embrace the experience with a wide open heart and mind.
After Your Reiki Initiation
The Initiation is a transformational ceremony. Having being offered the spiritual blessing of remembering your spiritual essence, you may start to view your life differently and feel inspired to make positive changes to areas that are no longer in alignment with who you really are.
In the days after your Reiki Initiation you may also experience a "healing response". This happens while Reiki is actively flushing your system of all that no longer serves you, which can manifest as physical, mental, emotional or spiritual symptoms.
A healing response may look like:
Feeling euphoric.
Feeling energised.
Feeling tired.
Feeling emotional.
Having an unsettled tummy.
Nausea.
Headache.
Sweating.
Having vivid dreams.
To help the energy shift: drink plenty of water, rest when you need to, cry when you need to, express your emotions safely with someone, and practice Reiki meditations along with self-Reiki daily.
Please always use your discernment. If you feel that you need professional medical or psychological care, please get it straight away.
If you're excited to become an initiated member of the Reiki community, to experience your true self and awaken your spiritual gifts, I look forward to having you join us at a Reiki class.
With love and gratitude,
Charisse
